Alice Ping Yee Ho’s Concerto for piano and orchestra, subtitled “Pictures from an Imaginary Exhibition,” references Mussorgsky and draws inspiration from paintings by Wesley Tongson and Christina Petrowska Quilico, who also performs the world première as soloist. Anton Bruckner’s Symphony No. 8, his final completed symphony, is one of the great monuments of the symphonic repertoire, beginning in extraordinary stillness and mystery, described by Heinrich Schenker as “like the beginning of the world,” before unfolding into vast orchestral landscapes, and culminating in a finale that recalls and transforms earlier themes into a unified, powerful conclusion of immense scale and impact.
